The Meadow

The Meadow is a stretch of grassland that runs north to south between the house and garden and the preserved riparian buffer. It used to be one of the three pastures for our sheep. Now, it's the source of quite a few bales of hay that are sold to neighboring (horse) farms. Untouched by any chemical fertilizer for many decades, clouds of butterflies enjoy the flowers of the different grasses, milkweed, thistle, Queen Anne’s Lace, and clover: Black Swallowtails, Cabbage Whites, Common Buckeyes, Easter Tiger Swallowtails, Fritillaries, Painted Ladies, Monarchs, Summer Azures, Viceroys, Zebra Swallowtails, to mention a few. All of this accompanied by a background choir of crickets, grasshoppers, cicadas, bees, and the many song birds perching in the trees on the edges of the field.
